Objetivo: Determinar la asociación entre talla baja y erro-res de refracción ocular en escolares de Muquiyauyo. Metodología: El tamaño de la población estuvo constituidapor 250 escolares y el tamaño muestral (n) para el nivel deconfianza 99.99% fue de 215 escolares, el estudio fue analí-tico observacional transversal, y la técnica utilizada para la re-colección de datos fue de observación y encuesta medianteuna ficha con datos de medición antropométrica y refracciónocular (medida de vista con autokeratorefractometro). Resultados: De los 215 niños evaluados 158 presentanerrores de refracción ocular, a quienes se les realizó la medidade vista con autokeratorefractometro; presentando 17 niñosmiopía, 9 hipermetropía, 21 astigmatismo, 32 miopía y astig-matismo y 79 hipermetropía y astigmatismo. Con respecto al análisis bivariado de talla baja y miopía, astigmatismo, hiperme tropía se encontraron que los niños que tienen tallabaja se asociaron significativamente con el astigmatismo p = <0.0000965, la razón de prevalencia =2.33 IC (1.44,3.78); es decir, que los que presentan talla baja tienen dosveces más el riesgo de presentar astigmatismo. Los niños que presentaron talla baja se asocian significati-vamente con refracción ocular P=<0.01 razón de prevalencia6.81 IC (2.57,18.1). Conclusión: Los escolares de Muquiyauyo con talla bajatienen 6 veces más riesgo de presentar alteraciones en la re-fracción ocular.(AU)


Objective: To determine the association between shortstature and ocular refractive errors in schoolchildren inMuquiyauyo. Methodology: The population size consisted of 250 scho-olchildren and the sample size(n) for the 99.99% confidencelevel was 215 schoolchildren. The study was a cross-sectionalobservational analytical study, and the technique used fordata collection was observation and survey using an anthro-pometric measurement and ocular refraction data sheet (eyemeasurement with autokeratorefractometer). Results: Of the 215 children evaluated, 158 had ocular re-fractive errors, and their eyesight was measured with an au-tokeratorefractometer; 17 children had myopia, 9 had hypero-pia, 21 had astigmatism, 32 had myopia and astigmatism and79 had hyperopia and astigmatism. With respect to the biva-riate analysis of short stature and myopia, astigmatism andhyperopia, it was found that children with short stature weresignificantly associated with astigmatism p = <0.0000965,prevalence ratio =2.33 CI (1.44, 3.78); that is, those withshort stature have twice the risk of presenting astigmatism. Children with short stature are significantly associated withocular refraction P=<0.01 prevalence ratio 6.81 CI (2.57,18.1). Conclusion: Muquiyauyo school children with short statureare 6 times more likely to have ocular refractive disorders.(AU)

Background: In China, the prevalence of mental health issues among college students is a significant concern in society. This study aims to investigate the impact of early dietary quality on the psychological well-being of college students and elucidate the underlying mechanisms through which these effects occur, specifically focusing on height and qi-deficiency as mediators according to Chinese traditional medicine (CTM). Methods: A total of 655 college students were surveyed in October 2023 using paper-pencil-based questionnaires at four second-tier universities in Sichuan Province. The assessment included mental health, height, and qi-deficiency. Pearson's correlation and linear regression analyses were employed to examine the mediation model and test the hypotheses. Results: The college students exhibited acceptable levels of early diet quality (M = 3.72) and mental health (M = 3.63), while also presenting mild qi-deficiency symptoms (M = 2.25). Their average height was measured at 164.61 cm. Early diet quality demonstrated significant associations with mental health (r = 0.38, p < 0.01), height (r = 0.32, p < 0.01), and qi-deficiency (r = -0.32, p < 0.01). Mental health displayed correlations with height (r = 0.32, p < 0.01) and qi-deficiency (r = -0.49, p < 0.01). The results of linear regression analyses revealed significant associations between early diet quality and mental health (ß = 0.31, p < 0.01), height (ß = 0.21, p < 0.01), as well as qi-deficiency (ß = -0.26, p < 0.01). Furthermore, when early diet quality was included in the regression model, both height (ß = 0.21, p < 0.01) and qi-deficiency (ß = -0.35, p < 0.01) emerged as significant mediators in the relationship with mental health. Conclusion: The mediation model and hypotheses were strongly supported, demonstrating that early diet quality exerted an influence on the mental health of college students through two distinct pathways: height and qi-deficiency. Moreover, the mediating effect of qi-deficiency was found to be more pronounced than that of height in the relationship between early diet quality and mental health among college students.

OBJECTIVES: Inherited amino-acid metabolism disorders (IAAMDs) require lifelong protein-restricted diet. We aimed to investigate: 1/ whether IAAMDs was associated with growth, pubertal, bone mineral apparent density (BMAD) or body composition impairments; 2/ associations linking height, amino-acid mixture (AAM), plasma amino-acids and IGF1 concentrations. DESIGN: Retrospective longitudinal study of 213 patients with neonatal-onset urea cycle disorders (UCD,n = 77), organic aciduria (OA,n = 89), maple syrup urine disease (MSUD,n = 34), or tyrosinaemia type 1 (n = 13). METHODS: We collected growth parameters, pubertal status, BMAD, body composition, protein-intake, and IGF1 throughout growth. RESULTS: Overall final height (n = 69) was below target height (TH): -0.9(1.4) vs. -0.1(0.9) SD, p < 0.001. Final height was ≤ TH-2SD in 12 (21%) patients. Height ≤ - 2SD was more frequent during puberty than during early-infancy and pre-puberty: 23.5% vs. 6.9%, p = 0.002; and vs. 10.7%, p < 0.001. Pubertal delay was frequent (26.7%). Height (SD) was positively associated with isoleucine concentration: ß, 0.008; 95%CI, 0.003 to 0.012; p = 0.001. In the pubertal subgroup, height (SD) was lower in patients with vs. without AAM supplementation: -1.22 (1.40) vs. -0.63 (1.46) (p = 0.02). In OA, height and median (IQR) isoleucine and valine concentrations(µmol/L) during puberty were lower in patients with vs. without AAM supplementation: -1.75 (1.30) vs. -0.33 (1.55) SD, p < 0.001; and 40 (23) vs. 60 (25) (p = 0.02) and 138 (92) vs. 191 (63) (p = 0.01), respectively. No correlation was found with IGF1. Lean-mass index was lower than fat-mass index: -2.03 (1.15) vs. -0.44 (0.89), p < 0.001. CONCLUSIONS: In IAAMDs, growth retardation worsened during puberty which was delayed in all disease subgroups. Height seems linked to the disease, AAM composition and lower isoleucine concentration, independently of the GH-IGF1 pathway. We recommend close monitoring of diet during puberty.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional and retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effect of 3 types of short stature [partial growth hormone deficiency (GHD), GHD, and idiopathic short stature (ISS)] and recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy on scoliosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: In short stature, rhGH is widely used and the concentration of growth hormone varies among types. The epidemiologic characteristics of scoliosis and the role of rhGH in scoliosis remain unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 3896 patients with short stature (partial GHD, GHD, and ISS), and a 1:1 age and sex-matched control group with preexisting whole-spine radiographs. The cohort study included 2605 subjects who underwent radiography more than twice to assess scoliosis development, progression, and the need for bracing and surgery. Adjusted logistic regression was used to assess differences in the prevalence of scoliosis among patients with partial GHD, GHD, ISS, and controls. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze the time course of scoliosis development and progression. Cox regression was applied to assess the independent factors related to scoliosis development and progression. Mendelian randomization analyses were also performed. RESULTS: Compared with controls, patients with short stature had a higher incidence of scoliosis (34.47% in partial GHD, 31.85% in GHD, 32.94% in ISS vs . 8.83% in control, P < 0.001), a higher risk of scoliosis development [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.964 in partial GHD, P < 0.001; HR = 1.881 in GHD, P = 0.001; HR = 1.706 in ISS, P = 0.001), but not a higher risk of progression, brace, or surgery. Among the 3 types of short stature, there were no differences in the incidence, development, and progression of scoliosis or the need for bracing or surgery. RhGH treatment increased the risk of scoliosis development in each short-stature group (HR = 2.673 in partial GHD, P < 0.001; HR = 1.924 in GHD, P = 0.049; HR = 1.564 in ISS, P = 0.004). Vitamin D supplementation was protective against scoliosis development (HR = 0.456 in partial GHD, P = 0.003; HR = 0.42 in GHD, P = 0.013; HR = 0.838 in ISS, P = 0.257). CONCLUSIONS: More attention should be paid to the spinal curve in patients with partial GHD, GHD, or ISS. For short stature treated with rhGH, the risk of scoliosis development was increased. Vitamin D supplementation may be beneficial for prevention. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III.

BACKGROUND: Herbal medicines have been used for a long time to treat idiopathic short stature (ISS) in children in East Asian countries. The aim of this study was to analyze the cost-effectiveness of 5 herbal medicines frequently used in clinical settings for children with ISS based on medical records. METHODS: Patients with ISS who had been prescribed a 60-day supply of herbal medicines in 1 Korean medicine hospital were included in this analysis. Their height and height percentile were measured before and after treatment within 6-months. The average cost-effectiveness ratios (ACERs) of 5 herbal medicines for height (cm) and height percentile were calculated for boys and girls, respectively. RESULTS: The ACERs per 1 cm height growth were USD 56.2 (Naesohwajung-Tang), USD 74.8 (Ogapi-Growth decoction), USD 86.6 (Gamcho-Growth decoction), USD 94.6 (Gwakhyangjeonggi-San plus Yukmijihwang-Tang), and USD 113.8 (Boyang-Growth decoction). The ACERs per 1 percentile height growth were USD 205 (Naesohwajung-Tang), USD 293 (Ogapi-Growth decoction), USD 470 (Gamcho-Growth decoction), USD 949 (Boyang-Growth decoction), and USD 1051 (Gwakhyangjeonggi-San plus Yukmijihwang-Tang). CONCLUSION: Herbal medicine might be a potential economical alternative treatment for ISS.

INTRODUCTION: Adequate nutrition plays an important role in linear growth throughout childhood, including puberty. However, not all children are willing or able to consume an adequate and balanced diet daily. We aimed to evaluate the 1-year effectiveness and safety of nutritional supplementation on linear growth, weight gain, and changes in body composition in short and lean peripubertal boys. METHODS: A 1-year, 2-phase multicenter interventional study comprising 1-6 months of a double-blinded intervention with nutritional formula or placebo, followed by 6-12 months of an open-label extension with the nutritional formula for all participants. RESULTS: The outcomes of the double-blinded intervention were reported previously. A total of 79/98 (81%) boys, aged ≥10 years, Tanner stages 1-3, completed the open-labeled extension phase. For this phase, a significant dose-response correlation (p < 0.05) was found of the consumption of the formula with Δ height-SDS, Δ weight-SDS, and Δ muscle mass (crude correlations and after adjustment for baseline age and end-of-study Tanner stage). In the extension phase and in the 12-month analysis, participants who were good formula consumers (intake ≥50% of the recommended dose) maintained their height-SDS, while poor consumers had a significant decline in their height-SDS (p = 0.028 and p = 0.009, between group difference in the extension phase and 12-month analysis, respectively). Between-group differences were not observed in the Tanner stage at any point of the study. No serious adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS: An intervention in healthy peripubertal boys suggests that 1-year consumption of a multi-nutrient, protein-rich nutritional supplement is efficacious and safe. The induced changes in growth and body composition, although modest, may be clinically significant. The effect of the formula on growth parameters was not mediated by enhancement of the pubertal tempo.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Despite optimal conventional treatment (oral phosphate supplements and active vitamin D analogs), about 40-50% of children with well-controlled X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) show linear growth failure, making them less likely to achieve an acceptable final height. Here, we studied the hypothesis that rhGH treatment improves final height in children with XLH and growth failure. METHODS: Two cohorts of children with XLH were included in this retrospective longitudinal analysis: (1) a cohort treated with rhGH for short stature (n = 34) and (2) a cohort not treated with rhGH (n = 29). The mean duration of rhGH treatment was 4.4 ± 2.9 years. We collected the auxological parameters at various time points during follow-up until final height. RESULTS: In rhGH-treated children, 2 years of rhGH therapy was associated with a significant increase in height from - 2.4 ± 0.9 to - 1.5 ± 0.7 SDS (p < 0.001). Their mean height at rhGH discontinuation was - 1.2 ± 0.9 SDS and at final height was - 1.3 ± 0.9 SDS corresponding to 165.5 ± 6.4 cm in boys and 155.5 ± 6.3 cm in girls. Notably, the two groups had similar final heights; i.e., the final height in children not treated with rhGH being - 1.2 ± 1.1 SDS (165.4 ± 6.8 cm in boys and 153.7 ± 7.8 cm in girls), p = 0.7. CONCLUSION: Treatment with rhGH permits to improve final height in children with XLH and growth failure, despite optimal conventional treatment. We propose therefore that rhGH therapy could be considered as an option for short stature in the context of XLH.

Integrative traditional Korean medicine (TKM) treatment including herbal medicine and acupuncture has been used frequently by parents in South Korea for the treatment of children with idiopathic short stature (ISS). We aimed to report the TKM treatments currently being used for children with ISS and explore their therapeutic effects. The medical records of children who met the criteria for ISS and who had been treated with TKM for the management of ISS were retrospectively reviewed. In total, 116 patients (mean [standard deviation] age, 8.07 [3.08] years; 52.6% girls) enrolled in the study. Their mean height percentile was 1.45 and body mass index was 16.19 kg/m2. During the study period of 5 years, participants visited the outpatient clinic an average of 2.93 times; the mean number of days to the next visit was 101 days. All patients received herbal medicine treatment, and the formulation was mainly decoction type. Additional treatments including ear acupuncture and moxibustion were also used. After treatment with TKM, the height percentile and standard deviation scores increased in both girls and boys (P < .001 and P < .01, respectively). Additionally, the predicted adult height, estimated based on bone age, increased in girls (P < .05). This study provided preliminary data for future research in TKM use in children with ISS.

BACKGROUND: Stunting is a major health problem in low-income countries. We aimed to describe the implementation of a lipid-based nutrient supplement (LNS) program in a rural neighborhood in Cambodia and to assess its impact on statural growth. METHOD: This was a before-after comparative study. The program was promoted by the Pédiatres du Monde (PDM) organization between 2011 and 2019 in six villages in a rural area in Cambodia. The supplementation program consisted of daily administration of LNS during the third semester of pregnancy for the mothers and then between 6 and 24 months of age for the toddlers. Anthropometric data of the children were recorded during PDM visits before and after the program implementation, which allowed us to compare child growth in the two groups: control and intervention groups. Primary outcome was height-for-age between 24 and 35 months of age. RESULTS: Overall, 198 data were collected for children between 24 and 35 months of age in the control group. A total of 347 pregnant women were enrolled in the intervention phase. A total of 188 data were collected for children between 24 and 35 months of age in the intervention group. The mean height-for-age z-score in the population receiving LNS was higher than in the control group (-1.14 vs. -1.60, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding the weight-for-height z-score (WHZ; -1.11 vs. -1.26, p = 0.18) and children in the intervention group had a higher middle upper-arm circumference z-score (MUACZ; -0.75 vs.. -1.1, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: LNS supplementation significantly and increased the HAZ between 24 and 35 months of age. However, the fight against malnutrition is complex and needs intervention on multiple levels.

Human culture, biology, and health were shaped dramatically by the onset of agriculture ∼12,000 y B.P. This shift is hypothesized to have resulted in increased individual fitness and population growth as evidenced by archaeological and population genomic data alongside a decline in physiological health as inferred from skeletal remains. Here, we consider osteological and ancient DNA data from the same prehistoric individuals to study human stature variation as a proxy for health across a transition to agriculture. Specifically, we compared "predicted" genetic contributions to height from paleogenomic data and "achieved" adult osteological height estimated from long bone measurements for 167 individuals across Europe spanning the Upper Paleolithic to Iron Age (∼38,000 to 2,400 B.P.). We found that individuals from the Neolithic were shorter than expected (given their individual polygenic height scores) by an average of −3.82 cm relative to individuals from the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic (P = 0.040) and −2.21 cm shorter relative to post-Neolithic individuals (P = 0.068), with osteological vs. expected stature steadily increasing across the Copper (+1.95 cm relative to the Neolithic), Bronze (+2.70 cm), and Iron (+3.27 cm) Ages. These results were attenuated when we additionally accounted for genome-wide genetic ancestry variation: for example, with Neolithic individuals −2.82 cm shorter than expected on average relative to pre-Neolithic individuals (P = 0.120). We also incorporated observations of paleopathological indicators of nonspecific stress that can persist from childhood to adulthood in skeletal remains into our model. Overall, our work highlights the potential of integrating disparate datasets to explore proxies of health in prehistory.

OBJECTIVE: The signaling axis consisting of GH-IGF1-IGFBP3 is the primary signal taht acts prepubertally to influence height development. Growth plate thinning and even premature closure have been reported in children with tumors treated with retinoid chemotherapy, resulting in long bone dysplasia. Growth failure may occur despite received GH treatment, but the reason is unknown. This study investigate the effect of high-dose all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) on the development of long bones in growing SD rats. METHODS: A total of 20 three-week-old male SD rats were randomly divided into a control group and an experimental group (n = 10). Rats were treated by gavage with or without high-dose ATRA for 10 days. The body weights of the rats were recorded daily. At the end of the experiment, we measured the length of nose-tail and tibia, stained the tibia and liver for pathological tissue and RT-PCR reaction, and measured the levels of serum GH, IGF1 and IGFBP3, and so on. RESULTS: Compared with controls, experimental rats exhibited reduced body weight and shortened nasal-tail and radial tibial length. Cyp26b1 enzyme activity in the liver was elevated, and histopathological staining revealed that the cartilaginous epiphyseal plate was narrowed, the medullary cavity of trabecular bone was sparse, the number of trabecular bones was decreased, trabecular separation was increased, bone marrow mineralization was enhanced, osteoclastic activity was increased, and circulating GH-IGF1-IGFBP3 levels were decreased. However, RT-PCR reaction results of localized proximal tibiae showed upregulation of IGF1 and downregulation of IGFBP3. CONCLUSIONS: High-dose ATRA intake over a short period of time can reduce GH-IGF1-IGFBP3 levels, affect cartilage and bone homeostasis, and inhibit bone growth in developing animals.

PURPOSE: Patients with hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets are short and disproportionate and very little information is available on segmental growth, but the body disproportion at adulthood leads us to think that the growth velocity of legs is slower. METHODS: A total of 96 children were included and molecular testing was carried out in 42. Children who reached adult height were classified into two groups according to their compliance to conventional treatment (phosphate supplement and calcitriol). Individual growth records of height and sitting height/height were plotted using Argentine reference data in 96 children and growth curves were estimated by fitting Preece-Baines Model 1 in 19 of the children. RESULTS: Molecular testing revealed sequence deleterious alterations or large deletions in 36/42 patients. During childhood, 76% of children grew below - 1.88 standard deviation score (SDS) and 97% had body disproportion. During adolescence, the mean peak height velocity for the good and poor compliance to treatment groups was 7.8 (0.6) and 5.4 (0.4) cm/year in boys and 7.0 (0.7) and 5.2 (0.8) cm/year in girls, respectively. At adulthood, the median sitting height/height ratio was 2.32 and 6.21 SDS for the good and poor compliance to treatment groups, respectively. The mean pubertal growth spurt of the trunk was -0.8 (1.4) SDS, with a short pubertal growth spurt of - 1.8 (0.4) SDS for limbs in the good compliance group. Median adult height in 13/29 males and 30/67 females was -4.56 and -3.16 SDS, respectively. CONCLUSION: For all patients the growth spurt was slower, secondary to a short growth spurt of limbs, reaching a short adult height with body disproportion that was more prominent in the poor compliance group.

Neonatal nutritional supplements may improve early growth for infants born small, but effects on long-term growth are unclear and may differ by sex. We assessed the effects of early macronutrient supplements on later growth. We searched databases and clinical trials registers from inception to April 2019. Participant-level data from randomised trials were included if the intention was to increase macronutrient intake to improve growth or development of infants born preterm or small-for-gestational-age. Co-primary outcomes were cognitive impairment and metabolic risk. Supplementation did not alter BMI in childhood (kg/m2: adjusted mean difference (aMD) -0.11[95% CI -0.47, 0.25], p = 0.54; 3 trials, n = 333). Supplementation increased length (cm: aMD 0.37[0.01, 0.72], p = 0.04; 18 trials, n = 2008) and bone mineral content (g: aMD 10.22[0.52, 19.92], p = 0.04; 6 trials, n = 313) in infancy, but not at older ages. There were no differences between supplemented and unsupplemented groups for other outcomes. In subgroup analysis, supplementation increased the height z-score in male toddlers (aMD 0.20[0.02, 0.37], p = 0.03; 10 trials, n = 595) but not in females, and no significant sex interaction was observed (p = 0.21). Macronutrient supplementation for infants born small may not alter BMI in childhood. Supplementation increased growth in infancy, but these effects did not persist in later life. The effects did not differ between boys and girls.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing among African children potentially predisposing them to greater obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in adulthood. This risk may be higher among growth-impaired children who may have greater fat mass. Therefore, we examined the effects of school-based physical activity (PA) promotion and multi-micronutrient supplementation (MMNS) on body composition among South African children enrolled in a longitudinal school-based randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Children were cluster-randomized by class to one of four groups: (a) a physical activity group (PA), (b) a multi-micronutrient supplementation group (MMNS), (c) a physical activity + multi-micronutrient supplementation group (PA + MMNS), and (d) control group, and were being followed for 3 years. Linear random effects regression models with random intercepts for school classes tested the associations of each intervention arm with overall fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), truncal fat mass (TrFM), and truncal fat-free mass (TrFFM) at 9 months (T2) for boys and girls. These differences were then explored among children who differed in height velocity (HV). RESULTS: A total of 1304 children (614 girls, 667 boys) in twelve clusters were assessed at baseline and after 9 months follow-up (T2). At baseline, approximately 15% of children were classified as overweight or obese while approximately 38% of children were classified as mildly stunted or moderately/severely stunted. Among girls, promotion of PA was associated with reduced FM and TrFM at T2 while MMNS was associated with increased FFM. Children with reduced HV in the PA arm had reduced FM while children in the MMNS arm with lower HV had increased FM compared to children in the control arm. Similarly, children with lower HV in the MM and PA groups had reduced TrFM compared to children in the control arm. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that the promotion of school-based physical activity programs and micronutrient supplementation can reduce childhood adiposity and so reduce the risk of obesity and chronic diseases later in adulthood. J Strength Cond Res 36(7): 1961-1965, 2022-International long-haul air travel is a necessity for many athletes as part of their training or competition schedules. However, long-haul travel is also associated with impaired neuromuscular function. An athlete's lower body neuromuscular status is frequently assessed and monitored using countermovement jump (CMJ). This study assessed the impact of westbound trans-meridian travel on changes in CMJ performance in highly trained aerobic athletes. Highly trained male rowers (n = 21, 23.7 ± 1.4 years, 1.91 ± 0.07 m, 86.9 ± 9.9 kg) undertook a westbound flight incurring 22 hours of flight time with 30 hours of total travel time across 9 time zones. Athletes completed a single set of 6 loaded CMJ repetitions before and after travel with performance measured using a digital optical encoder attached to a 20 kg barbell. Each CMJ repetition was assessed for mean concentric velocity, jump height (JH), eccentric displacement, JH:dip ratio, mean power, and mean eccentric velocity, with comparisons made between mean set changes before and after travel. Changes were compared using a one tail paired t-test and characterized using Cohen's d (95% confidence interval) effect sizes. Significance was accepted at p ≤ 0.05. Small-to-moderate changes were observed in all variables following westbound travel. These changes may be because of retention of high training loads before travel resulting in the athletes being in a fatigued state, whereas travel time worked as a forced recovery period. Reductions in CMJ performance are likely following westbound travel, however, may be affected by training fatigue before travel that may confound CMJ performance as a monitoring metric.

BACKGROUND: Body weight scales to height with a power of ≈2 (weight/height2 ), forming the basis of body mass index (BMI). The corresponding scaling of body composition measured by abdominal computed tomography (CT) to height has not been established. The objective of this analysis was to quantify the scaling of body composition measured by a single-slice axial abdominal CT image (skeletal muscle, and visceral, subcutaneous, and total adipose tissue) to height in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included non-Hispanic white males and females, aged 18-80 years, who were diagnosed with stage I-III CRC at an integrated health care system in North America between January 2006 and December 2011. Body composition was measured by a single-slice axial CT image of the third lumbar vertebra and analysed with a semi-automated threshold segmentation procedure. Allometric regression models were used to quantify height scaling powers (ß ± standard error) for each body composition measure, adjusted for age, for males and females. An interaction test was used to determine if height scaling powers were statistically significantly different between males and females. RESULTS: Among 2036 subjects, the mean (standard deviation) age was 64 ± 11 years, 1008 (49.5%) were female, and the mean (standard deviation) BMI was 27.9 ± 5.4 kg/m2 . Powers for skeletal muscle area were 1.06 ± 0.12 for males and 0.80 ± 0.12 for females (P = 0.049). Powers for visceral adipose tissue area were 1.81 ± 0.64 for males and 0.57 ± 0.79 for females (P = 0.16). Powers for subcutaneous adipose tissue area were 2.04 ± 0.42 for males and 0.81 ± 0.45 for females (P = 0.056). Powers for total abdominal adipose tissue area were 1.80 ± 0.46 for males and 0.76 ± 0.50 for females (P = 0.20). CONCLUSIONS: Body composition measured by single-slice axial abdominal CT, particularly muscle area, scales to height with age-adjusted powers that are different than 2 and are distinct between males and females. These observations may have implications for the development of height-adjusted body composition indices in patients with cancer.

OBJECTIVE: About one-third of under-five Filipino children are stunted, with significant socio-economic inequality. This study aims to quantify factors that explain the large gap in stunting between poor and non-poor Filipino children. DESIGN: Using the 2015 Philippine National Nutrition Survey, we conducted a linear probability model to examine the determinants of child stunting and then an Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition to explain the factors contributing to the gap in stunting between poor and non-poor children. SETTING: Philippines. PARTICIPANTS: 1881 children aged 6-23 months participated in this study. RESULTS: The overall stunting prevalence was 38·5 % with a significant gap between poor and non-poor (45·0 % v. 32·0 %). Maternal height, education and maternal nutrition status account for 26 %, 18 % and 17 % of stunting inequality, respectively. These are followed by quality of prenatal care (12 %), dietary diversity (12 %) and iron supplementation in children (5 %). CONCLUSIONS: Maternal factors account for more than 50 % of the gap in child stunting in the Philippines. This signifies the critical role of maternal biological and socio-economic circumstances in improving the linear growth of children.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of nutritional supplementation on height, weight and body composition in short and lean male preadolescents. METHODS: A randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of nutritional supplementation of short and lean prepubertal 10-14.5-year-old boys. Primary outcomes included Δheight-SDS and Δweight-SDS. Secondary outcomes included changes in body composition and BMI-SDS. RESULTS: Of 160 boys enrolled, 126 (80%) completed 6 months' intervention. Baseline age, height-SDS, weight-SDS, BMI-SDS, body composition and dietary intake were similar in the formula and placebo groups. 'Good' formula consumers (intake of ≥50% of the recommended dose, n = 30) gained significantly more in weight-SDS, BMI-SDS, fat-free-mass and muscle mass (p < 0.05) than did 'poor' consumers (n = 35) and the placebo group (n = 61). Only in the formula group, positive dose-response correlations were found between consumption of the formula and changes in the outcome parameters examined, including Δheight-SDS (r = 0.301, p = 0.015). Boys aged >11.4 years who were 'good' formula consumers maintained their Δheight-SDS, while Δheight-SDS declined in 'poor' consumers and the placebo group of the same age (p = 0.033). CONCLUSION: Intervention with a multi-nutrient, protein-rich formula was effective in increasing weight-SDS, fat-free-mass, muscle mass and BMI-SDS in short and lean prepubertal male adolescents. Good consumption of the formula prevented Δheight-SDS decline in the older participants.

Children in China's poor rural areas often have insufficient protein and micronutrient intake. There is little research about the effect of milk and egg supplementation published on these children. A prospective randomized controlled trial was applied to evaluate the effect of milk and egg supplementation on the growth and fitness of poor rural primary school students in southwest China whose physical development was below national averages. A total of 955 healthy students aged 6-13 years old were recruited. The intervention group (538) received 200 g milk and 50 g braised egg at each school day, while the control group (417) kept their normal diet and received no extra supplementation. Serum vitamin D levels were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A mixed linear model with repeated measures was performed to analyze the efficacy of the supplementation. Statistically significant interactions between groups and time were seen in weight in boys, but not in girls. Significant improvement in vitamin D levels, the broad jump, and the 8 × 50 m shuttle run were observed in both genders. Therefore, the supplementation of egg and milk for two years might have a positive effect on growth and physical fitness and decreasing vitamin D deficiency in poor rural Chinese children.

The problem of poor nutrition with impaired growth persists in young children worldwide, including in India, where wasting occurs in 20% of urban children (<5 years). Exacerbating this problem, some children are described by their parent as a picky eater with behaviors such as eating limited food and unwillingness to try new foods. Timely intervention can help prevent nutritional decline and promote growth recovery; oral nutritional supplements (ONS) and dietary counseling (DC) are commonly used. The present study aimed to determine the effects of ONS along with DC on growth in comparison with the effects of DC only. Enrolled children (N = 321) were >24 to ≤48 months old, at malnutrition risk (weight-for-height percentile 3rd to 15th), and described as a picky eater by their parent. Enrollees were randomized to one of the three groups (N = 107 per group): ONS1 + DC; ONS2 + DC; and DC only. From day 1 to day 90, study findings showed significant increases in weight-for-height percentile for ONS1 + DC and for ONS2 + DC interventions, as compared to DC only (p = 0.0086 for both). There was no significant difference between the two ONS groups. Anthropometric measurements (weight and body mass index) also increased significantly over time for the two ONS groups (versus DC only, p < 0.05), while ONS1 + DC significantly improved mid-upper-arm circumference (p < 0.05 versus DC only), as well. ONS groups showed a trend toward greater height gain when compared to DC only group, but the differences were not significant within the study interval. For young Indian children with nutritional risk and picky eating behaviors, our findings showed that a 90-day nutritional intervention with either ONS1 or ONS2, along with DC, promoted catch-up growth more effectively than did DC alone.
